metadata

Often referred to as "data about data", metadata is structured data that describes individual pieces of information. This descriptive information can be generated automatically using software or manually by an author. An example of metadata is a library catalogue or an online directory.

The terms used to describe individual pieces of information need to be consistent. A group of terms is commonly referred to as a "controlled vocabulary".

Use of a controlled vocabulary imposes an important degree of consistency that supports searching and browsing.
Louis Rosenfeld & Peter Morville

Metadata helps your customers find information more effectively by increasing the quality of searches. It can also be valuable when developing ecommerce solutions and intelligent agents.

Through our experience in developing products which focus on the discovery of information in complex environments, we know how to successfully develop and apply metadata standards and vocabularies to suit a variety of situations.

Michael Rochford, Director - Information Design

We ensure that our client's projects involving metadata comply with both standards from the Dublin Core Metadata Initiative and the Australian Government Locator Service.
