The National Public Toilet Map shows the location and features of more than 14,000 public and private (public) toilet facilities across Australia, using information from over 1,200 providers.
Useful information is provided about each toilet, such as location, opening hours, features (such as baby change facilities), accessibility for people with a disability and links to other nearby toilets. Toilets can be found for specific towns/suburbs, near an address or point of interest and along a route between two addresses; allowing for trip planning. Street directory style maps complement toilet information to help visually identify the location of facilities.
The development of the National Public Toilet Map was an e-Health initiative funded by the Australian Government Department of Health and Ageing as part of the National Continence Management Strategy (NCMS). The strategy aims to improve continence treatment and management so that the two million Australians with continence issues can live and participate in their communities with dignity and confidence.
Human Solutions was contracted to redevelop the National Public Toilet Map in 2004, providing a broad range of services including project management, information architecture, software development, usability testing, help desk support, content management, site hosting and ongoing maintenance. The project was completed on schedule in July 2004 and launched to the public on 20 September 2004.
In 2007, Human Solutions successfully retendered for the National Public Toilet Map contract and refreshed the design of the website, including a simpler interface, improved trip planning, easier downloading of GPS coordinates of toilet locations, new mapping functionality, and the locations of caravan dump points.
The graphic design elements of the new look National Public Toilet Map website were delivered by Wise Guise.
Launched by the Minister for Ageing, the Hon Justine Elliot at the 17th National Conference on Incontinence on 6 November 2008, part of the enhanced Toilet Map is a mobile version of the website.
The mobile website allows users to to locate the 5 nearest toilets to their location and then access directions to the chosen public toilet on any mobile phone with web browsing capabilities.
The National Public Toilet Map demonstrates our ability to:
-
provide a full service to clients, from design through to delivery
-
understand the needs of multiple stakeholders, and incorporate their requirements into a single system
-
focus on delivering Web sites which provide high levels of usability and accessibility, exceeding best practice standards set by industry and government
